The story of the Allendale Public Library is extraordinary. In June 1952, a local newspaper story printed a full-page story about William and Mary Lee, the library’s most important and vibrant benefactors and volunteers. Weeks later, William Lee is dead, Mary Lee announces her retirement, and the future of the library is in turmoil. Without the support of the Lee family, the trustees concluded they could not sustain the library.
These two pages from the official September 1952 meeting minutes of the library’s board of trustees tell the story of the painful decision confronting them and the future of the library.
